More than 50 years after a violent 1973 incident nearly claimed the lives of three officers, former Saanich Police Auxiliary Constable Graeme Henderson has finally been formally recognized for his extraordinary bravery. Henderson received the Chief Constable’s Citizen’s Award of Valour for placing himself in harm’s way during a transport of an impaired driver that suddenly turned into a knife assault; he shielded a fellow officer and was wounded in stopping the attack. His decisive intervention likely saved a colleague’s life, underscoring the courage and commitment volunteer officers can bring to policing even in the most life-threatening conditions.
