Conservative MP Sir Ashley Fox has secured a government review into extending statutory time-off rights to volunteer special constables, after lobbying for them to be included under the Employment Rights Act. Specials—whose numbers have fallen by two-thirds in a decade—often struggle to balance policing duties with unsupportive employers, as most receive no leave for their service.
Although his amendment to the Employment Rights Bill was voted down in the Commons, growing cross-party and policing support pushed ministers to commit to a consultation, marking a pivotal step toward improving recruitment, retention, and recognition of volunteer officers.
