The UK Home Office is launching a targeted recruitment drive to attract tech and cybersecurity experts into the Special Constabulary, urging professionals with digital skills to volunteer as police officers and help investigate online crime and gather electronic evidence. Special Constables are volunteer police officers with the same powers and uniform as regular officers who give up their spare time to support policing. With nine in ten investigations now involving a digital element, ministers say the expanded role for Specials will help tackle modern crime while reversing a steep decline in volunteer numbers seen over the last decade. Officials emphasized that this is part of a broader strategy to diversify and strengthen the volunteer force at a time when digital expertise is increasingly critical to public safety.
