Rescued by an Officer, Inspired to Serve: Suffolk Auxiliary Officer’s Story

In July 2021, Suffolk County Police Officer Brian Christopher responded to a home in Mount Sinai, New York, where Vivek Panneerselvam had been found unresponsive at the bottom of his family’s swimming pool. Christopher entered the pool, pulled Panneerselvam to safety, and immediately began lifesaving measures. Panneerselvam had been underwater for nearly five minutes. He survived, made a full recovery, and went on to continue serving in the Army Reserve.

The impact of that response extended well beyond the emergency. Inspired by the officer who saved his life, Panneerselvam joined the Suffolk County Police Department as an Auxiliary Officer, turning a personal experience with local police into a commitment to further serve his community. Five years after the rescue, the two were reunited as Christopher received the department’s Lifesaving Award in recognition of his quick response, training, and decisive actions.

Panneerselvam’s journey is a powerful example of how volunteer law enforcement can grow from personal connections and a desire to give back. Once the person whose life was saved by a police officer, he now serves as an Auxiliary Officer alongside the department that helped give him a second chance.
