Members of the Santa Clarita Valley Search and Rescue Team — including LA County Reserve Deputy Anthony “Tony” Buttitta and High Risk Volunteer Michael Kaericher — are drawing national attention after a dramatic canyon rescue that reunited three missing dogs with their owners. What began as a routine training scout quickly turned into a lifesaving operation when the 2 rescuers detoured from a training mission and followed frantic barking into rugged terrain, locating exhausted animals trapped deep in a remote canyon and safely guiding them to safety.
The viral rescue highlights the extraordinary dedication of search-and-rescue personnel, many of whom serve as reserve deputies and volunteers assisting law enforcement around the clock.
And for Reserve Deputy Buttitta, this isn’t the first time he’s made headlines. Buttitta, also the 2023 & 2024 videographer of the year for LA's FOX11, was previously recognized for heroic Good Samaritan actions saving the life of a hit-and-run victim, his continued service underscores the critical impact reserve officers have on public safety and community response.
