In September 2024, British Transport Police Special Constable Gary Blackburn began his shift in Preston expecting a busy day supporting the Radio Two in the Park event. What followed was something no one could have anticipated.
While on duty at Preston railway station, SPC Blackburn was attacked by a man armed with a large knife. Despite suffering a serious, near-fatal injury, quick action from Duty Sergeant PS Stu Maw and Amulet Security Officer Karl Cashmore helped bring the situation under control and save SPC Blackburn’s life.
After a remarkable recovery, Gary refused to let the incident end his service. Showing incredible determination and resilience, he returned to the Special Constabulary, continuing to volunteer on the frontline and support his colleagues in keeping the public safe.
This year, Gary’s courage and commitment were formally recognised when he was named Special of the Year at the BTP Federation Awards of Excellence. He received a standing ovation as he took to the stage to collect his award — a testament to the respect and admiration he’s earned from everyone around him.
👏 Please join us in congratulating SPC Gary Blackburn — a true example of bravery, selflessness, and dedication to duty.
