One Decision to Volunteer, 50 Years Ago, Led to a Lifetime of Service.

Fifty years of volunteer service is an extraordinary achievement, and for Special Constable Ambassador Ken Avery, it represents a lifetime dedicated to protecting his community. At 80 years old, Avery is celebrating five decades with the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Special Constabulary, having first joined as a Special Constable in 1973 after seeing a recruitment poster at his local police station. What began as a desire to "help his community" evolved into a remarkable volunteer policing career that included frontline patrol, leadership roles equivalent to Special Sergeant and Special Inspector, oversight of approximately 40 Special Constables in Portsmouth, major event planning, and participation in countless policing operations.

Even after retiring from operational duties in 2023, Avery continues serving as the force's first Special Constabulary Ambassador, mentoring new volunteers and supporting recruitment, training, and ceremonial events. His service has been recognized with numerous long-service honors, the British Empire Medal (BEM), and widespread admiration from colleagues who credit him with shaping generations of volunteer police officers.

Ken Avery's remarkable journey is a powerful reminder that volunteer policing is not simply about giving time—it's about building a legacy of service that can strengthen a police service and inspire future generations for decades.
