A deeply tragic New Year’s Day incident in Orlando, Florida has claimed the life of Dennis Turner, a 23-year veteran of the Orlando Police Department who continued serving his community as a reserve officer after retirement. Turner, 64, was fatally shot outside a residence in what authorities describe as a family dispute on January 1 and later died at Orlando Regional Medical Center. The suspect, 58-year-old Jeffery London, fled the scene but was subsequently captured and charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Turner had retired in 2018 but returned in 2019 as part of OPD’s reserve unit, a group of experienced officers who support their department through extra-duty assignments. His death has sent shockwaves through the law-enforcement community, highlighting both the commitment reserve officers bring to public safety and the heartbreaking toll deadly violence can take on those who have devoted their lives to service.
