Philadelphia is preparing to launch a brand-new unarmed volunteer unit they are calling “auxiliary police” as soon as 2026, aiming to bolster public-safety efforts by giving community members a formal role in crowd management, event support and public-engagement duties ahead of the city’s busy calendar next year. The auxiliary officers will not carry weapons or make arrests, and it appears that they will be non-sworn, and perform no law enforcement duties, instead acting as extra “eyes and ears” for regular officers, helping with traffic flow, providing visible presence at public events, and strengthening police-community connections.
