The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) proudly welcomed 23 newly appointed Special Constables during a graduation ceremony marking their completion of the OPS Special Constable Training Program. The class — which includes Generalist Special Constables, Forensic Identification Technicians (FIT) and District Investigations Special Constables (DISC) — completed comprehensive training in provincial and federal law, investigative support, ethics, de-escalation and community engagement. Under Ontario’s Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA), Special Constables are authorized to assist frontline officers with a range of duties including investigative support, evidence management and mental health responses, helping strengthen OPS’s capacity to serve and protect Ottawa residents. Chiefs and Board leadership stressed that the new Special Constables will enhance responsiveness across the city and support community policing efforts under the direction of sworn officers.
