Victoria Police is rolling out a major reform that leans on reservist personnel to shift frontline focus back to streets: as part of a 90-day “Operation Pulse,” PSOs (Protective Services Officers) and police officers will be deployed to patrol Melbourne shopping centers over summer, while reservist officers take on desk and administrative duties to free up full-time staff.
The initiative, announced by Chief Commissioner Mike Bush and supported by the state government, aims to make policing more visible and proactive in high-risk public areas.
However, the state’s police union has sharply criticized the plan, calling it poorly thought out and warning that over-reliance on reservists could undercut long-term capacity.
