City of Tonawanda Police Chief Robert Clontz has retired after a distinguished 40-year law-enforcement career that began in auxiliary service before moving into full-time policing. Hired by the department in 1989, Clontz initially served for several years as a member of the auxiliary unit, gaining experience and contributing to public safety before transitioning into a full-time patrol officer role. Over the decades, he rose through the ranks — serving as an officer, detective, lieutenant and ultimately chief, becoming a respected leader within the department and the community, while continuing to support the auxiliary unit where it all began. His career stands as a powerful example of how auxiliary and volunteer service can serve as the foundation for a lifetime of commitment, leadership and service in law enforcement.
