A North Wilkesboro man is facing charges after allegedly impersonating a U.S. Marshal during an incident that also drew attention to the actions of an auxiliary law enforcement officer working private security.
According to investigators, the suspect falsely presented himself as a federal officer to 12-year auxiliary police veteran, Jeff Berrong, who was working as private security. Officer Berrong turned the suspect away and called in his suspicions of an impersonator. The suspect was located and ultimately arrested.
The case highlights the important role auxiliary and volunteer law enforcement personnel often play while supporting security operations and assisting local authorities in identifying suspicious or unlawful activity. Incidents involving police impersonation continue to be taken seriously by law enforcement agencies nationwide because of the potential threat they pose to public trust and public safety.
