Before becoming a Detective Inspector with Avon and Somerset Police and a nationally recognized leader in serious sexual offence investigations, Clare Ball took her first steps into policing by joining the Special Constabulary. Like many volunteer officers, Ball entered policing while balancing the responsibilities of everyday life, serving as a single mother and working part-time before deciding to pursue her long-held ambition of a policing career. Her experience as a Special Constable provided the foundation for what would become more than two decades of distinguished service, culminating in her leadership role with Operation Bluestone, the nationally recognized program focused on improving rape investigations. Reflecting on her journey, Ball credits the life experience she gained before and during her time as a volunteer officer with shaping both her investigative approach and her leadership style, emphasizing empathy, resilience, and creating an environment where colleagues feel supported. Her career is another powerful reminder that the Special Constabulary continues to provide a pathway into professional policing, developing future detectives, supervisors, and police leaders whose volunteer service becomes the cornerstone of a lifetime dedicated to public safety.
