Ramona’s National Night Out showcased the many ways volunteer law enforcement officers support the community, with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Volunteer Mounted Patrol and Volunteer Sheriff’s Patrol demonstrating that their contributions extend well beyond traditional patrol duties. A highlight of the evening was Trigger, a horse with the Sheriff’s Volunteer Mounted Patrol, who drew plenty of attention as officers Cindy Keiser and Barbara Wiener introduced him to attendees.
The Mounted Patrol provides a highly visible presence throughout Ramona and Poway, using its horses to patrol trails and parking lots, assist with crowd control at large events, and serve as the Sheriff’s Office’s “eyes and ears” while interacting directly with the public. The event also highlighted the work of the Volunteer Sheriff’s Patrol, whose members perform vacation checks on homes when residents are away and participate in the You Are Not Alone program, helping maintain connections with local seniors. National Night Out gave these volunteers an opportunity not only to demonstrate what they do, but to build relationships and explain firsthand how volunteer personnel complement the Sheriff's Office's broader public safety mission.
Their presence at the event was a powerful illustration of how trained volunteers can provide practical assistance, visibility, and community engagement while strengthening the connection between law enforcement and the people they serve. Ramona’s celebration ultimately demonstrated that volunteer law enforcement is not simply about putting on a uniform, it is about being present in the community, helping neighbors, and giving time to make public safety stronger.
