Custer County’s all-volunteer Sheriff’s Posse continues its legacy of public safety across rural Colorado, supplementing the Sheriff’s Office with event security, patrols, inmate transfers, evacuations, and major incident response despite modest resources.
Since its founding in 2003, Posse members have logged thousands of hours of service, receive training in firearms, room clearing and emergency tactics, and mostly self-equip, with community support playing a key role in providing specialized gear that the county can’t afford.
