For more than 50 years, Special Constable Lily Laing has demonstrated that volunteer policing is about far more than wearing a uniform, it's about investing in the next generation. Recognized as Edinburgh's longest-serving Special Constable, Lily continues to serve Police Scotland not only through her decades of volunteer policing, but also as Deputy Coordinator of the Edinburgh South Police Scotland Youth Volunteers (PSYV) program.
Drawing upon a lifetime of policing experience, she mentors young volunteers, teaches practical skills such as first aid, and helps educate participants on issues ranging from knife crime and online safety to hate crime, water safety, and responsible citizenship. Rather than simply delivering lessons, Lily encourages meaningful discussion, helping young people build confidence, develop leadership skills, and become positive role models within their communities. Her remarkable commitment illustrates how experienced Special Constables continue to shape the future of policing long after their frontline careers, ensuring the values of service, integrity, and community engagement are passed on to the next generation of volunteers.
Lily's story is a powerful reminder that volunteer law enforcement is not only about today's service—it is about inspiring tomorrow's leaders.
