Audubon County, Iowa officials have begun discussions with the Audubon County Sheriff’s Office regarding the creation of a county reserve deputy program, as local leaders weigh how volunteer law enforcement fits into long-term public safety planning. The conversation, held with county supervisors and the sheriff’s office, focused on the role reserve deputies will play in supporting patrol operations, special events, and emergency coverage when additional manpower is needed. Like many rural agencies, Audubon County already relies on a combination of full & part-time staff and "as needed" deputies to help meet community needs across a wide geographic area. Officials noted that reserve programs are a valuable resource, but also require ongoing recruitment, training, and administrative support to remain effective and sustainable in modern policing environments.
