Today, June 24, 2026, marks four years since the final call of the Framingham Auxiliary Police, bringing renewed attention to the loss of a volunteer law enforcement program that served the City of Framingham for more than 80 years. Organized in 1942 during World War II, the Auxiliary Police provided trained volunteer officers who supported community events, emergency management operations, disaster response, and public safety initiatives throughout the city. Over the decades, members collectively contributed hundreds of thousands of volunteer service hours, and the organization served as a pathway into law enforcement careers for numerous future police officers.
In 2022, the unit was disbanded following The MPTC vote that volunteer hours did not count towards the new Massachusetts law enforcement certification requirements for service hours as a requirement of additional training. This ended one of the Commonwealth’s longest-serving volunteer police organizations. Supporters continue to point to Framingham's Auxiliary Police as an example of the value that properly trained volunteer officers can bring to public safety and community resilience.
