The public safety and broadcasting communities are mourning the passing of Bill Hewitt, whose lifetime of service extended far beyond the newsroom. While many across mid-Michigan knew Hewitt as the trusted voice of WSGW Radio for more than four decades, he also dedicated himself to protecting his community as a Bay City Police Reserve Officer. During his years of volunteer law enforcement service, Hewitt earned the Bay City Police Department's highest award for heroism after rescuing a crash victim in 1987—an act that reflected his lifelong commitment to helping others. Beyond his reserve police service, Hewitt spent 40 years teaching first aid and CPR through the American Red Cross, served in leadership roles with Bay County Crime Stoppers and Crime Stoppers of Michigan, and built lasting relationships with law enforcement agencies throughout the region as an award-winning journalist. His life serves as a reminder that many reserve officers continue serving their communities in countless ways beyond wearing the badge. Whether reporting the news, volunteering in public safety, or responding to emergencies, Bill Hewitt exemplified a lifetime dedicated to service.
