Special Constable Lou Roberts on the Value of Volunteer Policing

After six years as a Special Constable, Lou Roberts challenges the assumption that all volunteer officers should become regular paid officers. As a Digital Communications & Engagement Assistant and a Special Constable with North Wales Police, she often hears, “Are you going to join as a regular officer then?” While many do transition, Roberts argues that choosing a different career path doesn't diminish a volunteer officer's value.

Roberts emphasizes the unique role of the Special Constabulary and the need to recognize volunteers for their commitment. She notes that policing requires diverse roles and that a regular officer's path isn't for everyone. Despite some volunteers not fully committing, dedicated ones must prove their professionalism and value. Her service underscores the importance of training, responsibility, and role investment.

Roberts highlights volunteer leadership, noting supervisory roles offer management experience but can lead to burnout without balance. Her message extends beyond the Special Constabulary: contributions to public safety should be measured by effort, professionalism, and commitment, not rank or pay. Roberts remains proud to serve North Wales Police, demonstrating that volunteer policing is a meaningful public service, not just a path to paid employment.
