Volunteer officers with the Devon and Cornwall Special Constabulary recently took the lead in a proactive road safety operation aimed at reducing serious collisions and saving lives across South Devon. During the force-wide Fatal Five traffic enforcement initiative, Special Constables planned and led operations in Paignton, Torquay, and Brixham, targeting the five behaviors most commonly associated with fatal and serious injury collisions: speeding, seatbelt violations, distracted driving, impaired driving, and driving while unfit. Throughout the operation, Special Constables identified numerous traffic offenses while also responding to other incidents, including assisting at a fatal road traffic collision. In another demonstration of their commitment to public safety, two volunteer officers remained on duty after the operation concluded and provided lifesaving CPR after being flagged down by a member of the public. The initiative highlights the professionalism, capability, and operational value of Special Constables, who serve as fully warranted volunteer police officers and continue to make significant contributions to frontline policing and road safety across Devon and Cornwall.
